THE NOVEMBER HANDICAP

Contested on Manchester Racecourse since 1876, apart from a brief spell during the First World War when it was cancelled for 3 years, the Manchester November Handicap has brought the curtain down on the regular Flat racing season for almost a century and a half. This site provides a comprehensive history of the most famous end of season Handicaps; every winner, runner, owner, trainer and jockey. Results have been gathered in meticulous style by Anthony Lake who deserves considerable praise for locating even the most obscure pieces of information. The inaugural race, over 1 mile 4 furlongs, was held at the New Barns course in Manchester, before being extended to 1 mile 6 furlongs in 1880. It was reduced back to 1 mile 4 furlongs in 1902 when it was staged at the Castle Irwen course in Manchester. During the Second World War, from 1942-45, the race was run at Pontefract when known as the 'Substitute November Handicap', but the race returned to Manchester in 1946 and remained there until the course closed in 1963. In 1964 the race transferred permanently to Doncaster, although in 1989 the race was staged at Thirsk, while in 2005 Windsor hosted the race over 1 mile 3 1/2 furlongs.
